About Me
I'm Mark Johnson. I'm an abstract artist.
I have always loved art and since I was very young have
both drawn and painted. I also spent time in London studying
the highly technical art of holography, taught to me by
Peter Miller, who at the time was the World's leading colour
holographer. I worked for many years as a promoter but about
5 years ago I decided to follow my gut instincts and persue
my passion for art.
I started drawing and found I still
loved it. I went to Bristol Art Academy to hone my skills
including life drawing and
began carrying a small camera around with me to capture
source pictures for my drawing when I was out and about.
Soon I realised that I was
taking some great pictures. It wasn't long before the camera
took over from the pencils and paints as my medium of preference.
I started showing my photos and have had
them exhibited in several galleries. I also found that people
wanted to buy them.
Yet I kept experimenting. I was taking
shots with a digital camera and using software to fine tune
the pictures before I was totally happy with them. And as
I was experimenting I discovered new and fascinating techniques.
I started using the software to draw and paint. I mixed
pictures, distorted the images and enhanced them to create
new and very different art. I get some of my best results
by stretching the tools in the software, using them freely,
in ways they were not intentionally designed to be used.
This is where I am now. I take my photographs
and using a variety of different software, I turn them into
something new. I love these images, they're strong, vibrant,
unique, free and expressive. I love the fact that I use
computer software to create art and its not hampered by
any rules or conventions. I draw with it as if I'm using
pencils and paints. The colour and detail in these pictures
is immense and every time I look into them I see something
new.
Every abstract picture you see on this
site is a photograph or a collage of pictures, taken by
me and put through the various processes that I use.

I hope you like my art. I hope these pictures
give you the pleasure they've given me as I've created them.
My techniques are always evolving
and my collection of pictures growing. I hope there's something
here for you that you like.
